Winbond Electronics Corporation, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced that it has launched a new H/W monitoring IC. The W83L785R is aimed at Notebook PC and VGA card applications and offers a more flexible and cost-effective solution for mainstream and low-cost segment designs.
The W83L785R is a condensed version of the Company's W83L784R -- Winbond's most popular hardware monitor IC solution for notebooks. Specifically designed for the graphic cards and notebook systems, the W83L785R can be used to monitor a number of mission critical hardware parameters including voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures -- all crucial to the operation of a system.
The chip features an 8-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for monitoring four analog voltage inputs, two fan tachometer inputs and two remote temperature sensors. The remote temperature sensing can be performed by thermistors or connected to an IntelTM/AMDTM CPU thermal diode output. The W83L785R also provides two pulse width modulation (PWM) outputs for fan speed control and System Management Interrupt (SMI), Over Temperature (OVT) and Temp fault signals for system protection events. In addition to I2CTM serial bus interface and four pure GPIO, the W83L785R offers seven multifunctional GPIO pins for flexible programming. The chip is powered by 3.3V. Through the application software or BIOS, users can review all the monitored parameters of a system. A pop-up warning can also be activated when a monitored item is out of the proper/preset range. Application software options include Winbond Hardware DoctorTM, IntelTM LDCM (LanDesk Client Management), or other management application software. Users can set up upper and lower limits (alarm thresholds) of the monitored parameters and activate one programmable and maskable interrupt. To address the small footprint requirements of notebooks, the W83L785R comes in 20pin SSOP packaging.
The W83L785R offers a more flexible and cost-option than currently available on the market today. In concert with the best-selling W83L784R, the new chip enables the Company to provide a comprehensive suite of H/W monitor solutions for notebook and VGA card applications.
