Winbond America Introduces New Single Channel Voice CODEC Chip Featuring Enhanced Performance, Better Sound
Dec/19/2002

(San Jose, CA) -- Winbond Electronics Corporation America, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions to the consumer, computer, communications and electronics products markets, today introduced the W6811, a single channel, dual supply voice CODEC chip featuring improved performance and better sound over other solutions currently on the market. The chip is aimed at handset, speakerphone and telephony manufacturers migrating to 3V designs that still require the sound quality of 5V systems. It is the second in a family of CODEC chips rolled out by Winbond America this year. The first chip, the single-channel W6810, was introduced in July of this year. The W6811 is currently in sampling and is priced at $1.27 for 10,000/quantity.

The W6811 features 200nA typical power consumption in standby and power down modes, for improved power conservation design. The 5V analog interface enables the chip to maintain its long-distance line card drive capabilities while allowing design migration to lower power 3V digital logic. This means that the user can exploit the dynamic range of 5V signals while taking advantage of the power conservation benefits of a 3V architecture; a key benefit for speech and telephony applications that require higher voice quality at lower power consumption. The device is offered in 24-pin packaging.

"The W6811 is the second CODEC chip that Winbond America has launched in just the past four months," said Peter Himes, vice president, marketing, Winbond America. "The chip is based on Winbond's advanced mixed-signal technology and provides easy integration into mixed voltage platforms. In addition, the mixed voltage feature addresses two dynamic consumer market trends by complying with the need for low power, low voltage systems while sustaining the necessary analog dynamic range to drive high quality voice output."
