Winbond Electronics Corporation Announces Monthly Revenue Results For May 2002

(Taipei News) Winbond Electronics Corporation, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced its monthly revenue results for May 2002. Revenue for the month was approximately NT $2.235 billion, an increase of 5.08 percent when compared with NT $2.127 billion over the same period last year. Accumulated revenue for January to May 2002 was NT $13.444 billion, an increase of nearly 16.26 percent when compared with NT $11.564 billion over the same period last year.

The second calendar quarter of the year is traditionally slow for information system products. Coupled with seasonally lower demand for personal computers, and a subsequent decrease in the Average Sale Price (ASP) for DRAM, the result has been lower revenue results in May when compared with April 2002. However, compared with the same period last year, the Company's revenue grew approximately 5 percent. With respect to the Company's line of logic products, speech ICs, in particular, reported strong results. In addition, shipments for Winbond's wireless communication DECT ICs continued to grow. Overall, stable sales growth for logic products helped to balance out the Company's overall revenue results.

Winbond continues to invest aggressively in R&D; deploying a combination of new manufacturing technology and winning product solutions that benefit customers and enhance competitiveness. Recently, the Company successfully rolled out a three-in-one Ethernet chip. Winbond is currently is one of few companies worldwide that can provide a 10/100M Optical Fiber transmission Ethernet IC solution. Moreover, Winbond has successfully shipped its 0.175-micron Pseudo SRAM to Fujitsu and other major manufactures. The Company estimates shipments of this product should increase within the next six months contingent to approval from customers. Winbond will continue to focus its research and development efforts on high density Flash and niche DRAM products, fulfilling growing demand for mobile electronics products requiring multiple memory solutions.
