(Taipei News)Winbond Electronics Corporation, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced revenue results for the month of May 2003. Revenue for the month was approximately NT $2.005 billion, a decrease of 10.28 percent when compared with NT $2.235 billion over the same period last year. Accumulated revenue for 2003, January to May, was NT $10.804 billion, a decrease of nearly 19.64 percent, when compared with NT $13.444 billion over the same period last year.
Revenue for May decreased approximately 3.2 percent over the previous month. The slight drop was attributed primarily to the slow season for the PC market. An expectation of approximately a 20 percent drop in demand for motherboard also translated into less demand for PC peripheral devices. Overall, this trend contributed to decrease in revenues for May. In addition, due to the continued uncertainty of the SARS epidemic, some end-product customers have suspended consumer IC orders. This resulted in decreased sales in logic IC products when compared with April. Winbond anticipates that as the industry transitions into the high season for logic ICs in the third quarter, that the revenue for logic IC business will reflect increased demand and remain strong.
With respect to DRAM products, decreased shipments, particularly in commodity DRAM, adversely impacted sales in May. As DDR400 products become the primary choice in the market, coupled with the rise in product pricing, the Company expects to improve its line of DDR volume and product shipments. This, in turn, is expected to benefit Company revenues.
The Company anticipates that its line of Pseudo SRAM products will experience a significant upswing in demand during the fourth quarter of the year. In concert with improved demand for other niche DRAM products, Winbond estimates that this trend will continue, gradually yielding increased revenue over the second half of the year.
