Winbond Electronics Corporation Announces Monthly Revenue Results For December, 2001

(Taipei News) Winbond Electronics Corporation today announced its monthly revenue results for the month of December 2001. Revenue for the month was approximately NT $2.038 billion, a decrease of 34.01 percent when compared with NT $3.088 billion over the same period last year. Accumulated revenue for January to December 2001was NT $23.89 billion, a decrease of nearly 50.26 percent when compared with NT $48.02 billion over the same period last year.Month over month, revenue for December was up slightly comparing to November's revenue of NT $1.923 billion.

Overall, revenue for the second half of the year yielded good results, showing a consistently upward trend. Revenue for December exceeded NT $2 billion, mainly as a result of an increase in DRAM pricing. This was due to increased demand for DDR memory, which has spread throughout the SDRAM market. In addition, the Company experienced increased market share in the FLASH memory market, which also positively impacted revenue. Winbond continues to roll out DDR products and is targeting, among other markets, graphics memory applications. For the month of December, the Company's DDR wafer capacity was about 50 percent of total DRAM wafer capacity. Currently, Winbond has succeeded in integrating its 0.13-micron technology into its 512Mb DDR DRAM production process. The Company estimates that it should be able to supply customers with samples during the first quarter of this year with volume production gradually ramping up during the second quarter of 2002. This DDR production development process is currently the leading technology in Taiwan; the Company estimates that DRAM production costs will be lower by this year.

While the month of December typically reflects lower demand for Logic products, Winbond's Logic IC Business Group reported stable growth. Because Winbond offers a broad portfolio of IC solutions, the Company found itself in a situation wherein demand for each major product line was about level. In December, there was an increase in the shipment and enhanced market demand for TFT LCD Driver ICs. The Company shipped close to 2 million logic chips with resulting revenue of more than NT $100 million. In the future, Winbond plans to push for additional cost reductions, aggressively penetrate the Japanese market, and estimates that this product line will be one of the main sources for growth this year.
